How to Get Smell Out of Leather Jacket?

Once you get a staple piece of clothing, you want to wear it every day from nights out to outdoor BBQ. The same is the case with your favorite leather jacket.  By frequent use, the jacket gets smelly due to body odor or sweat, or sometimes it absorbs cigarette, smoke, or mildew or even a new leather jacket has a fishy or chemical smell. By taking proper care and maintenance you can get rid of the leather jacket smell easily. In this article, we will discuss that how to make a leather jacket smell good.

Body odor in a leather jacket

If a leather jacket gets body odor, it is due to the seat is absorbed in the lining. Because it does not get the smell. So you need to clean the lining of the leather jacket and not the leather. You will need mild detergent in a water bowl,  2 sponges, and a dry cloth. Dip a clean sponge in soapy water and squeeze any excess water and turn out the leather jacket inside out. Then start from the underarms area where most of the sweat resides. Then take a clean sponge and clean the soapy water before it gets dry. Repeat the process and clean the whole lining. Hang the leather jacket in the hanger and let it dry naturally without any heat or sunlight.

You can also deodorize the leather jacket lining with baking soda solution. Make a solution of solution baking soda in a bowl and spray it on the lining then wipe it off with a clean cloth and let it dry naturally. Dust off any excess baking soda. It is also an effective method to remove the smell from a leather jacket.

Fishy smell from leather jacket

IF your leather jacket smells like a fish it means that the manufacturer has used unfiltered fish oil which breaks down over time and releases an unpleasant fishy smell. The baking soda cleaning method does not work. You may need a commercial leather cleaner to remove the fishy smell.

Cigarette or Smoke smell in a leather Jacket

When you go outside at a BBQ party the leather is prone to absorb smoke or cigarette smell. To get rid of the smoke smell take equal parts of water and vinegar and apply this solution with a sponge and clean right away with a clean cloth. Make sure to apply leather conditioner right after this procedure.

The leather jacket smells like mildew

If your leather jacket gets a mildew smell, it means the jacket was stored in a humid place or in a plastic bag. To mildew smell, you can either use alcohol solution or vinegar solution. Spray any of the solutions on a leather jacket and dry with a clean cloth. Do not forget to apply a leather conditioner to maintain the softness of the leather jacket.

Chemical Smell in a leather Jacket

If your new leather jacket has a chemical smell, it means the leather is badly tanned or it is not real leather. A strong chemical smell comes from Faux leather. If it is sold under a real leather tag then do not buy that jacket. Spraying baking soda solution on a leather jacket is an effective way to deodorize the leather.

Rather than buying a fast-fashion jacket, it is wise to invest in a real leather jacket. It is not that difficult to get out of any kind of smell from a leather jacket.
